Basic Information

OpenAI's image models (the GPT Image line, evolved from DALL·E) generate and edit images through the ChatGPT apps and the Images API. Their standout trait is instruction-following: they handle complex, multi-part prompts and precise in-image text better than most, and conversational editing — 'remove the background, add a label, keep everything else' — works remarkably well.

Like all OpenAI image products it is cloud-only, available in speed-oriented and precision-oriented tiers, and priced per generated image or per token depending on the endpoint.

Best use cases

Computational Requirements

None — API-only. Hardware-privacy trade: your prompts and images pass through OpenAI's servers under their usage terms.

Commercial license

Commercial use of outputs is permitted under OpenAI's current terms (you own the outputs, subject to their usage policies and any applicable content provenance rules). API terms differ from consumer-app terms — enterprises should review both.
